About us

Our History

The practice was founded in 2004 at Mediclinic Kloof and Netcare Unitas hospital. We have more than 20 years of experience in the field of hand and upper limb therapy.

Let's get you back to doing the things you love without pain or limitations.

At Mischke hand therapists, we work in a dynamic and caring team of hand specialists in Pretoria to make sure you get the treatment you deserve.

Together with you as a patient, we get to the root of your hand or upper limb problem.  We then formulate a treatment plan to help you return to doing the things you love without pain or limitations.

Through the years we have walked the road of healing with patients, who have become family.

Isabel Mischke

Isabel decided to specialise in hand and upper limb injuries after being a patient herself when she sustained a hand injury in her final year of occupational therapy studies in 2001.

She went to London after finishing her studies and gained valuable experience at Kings College Hospital in the field of hand and upper limb rehabilitation.  After returning from London in 2004, she started Mischke Occupational Therapists at Mediclinic Kloof and Netcare Unitas hospital, while completing her Master’s degree in hand therapy.

From 2008-2010 she was involved in a medical project in Uganda, providing war victims with the necessary hand and upper limb rehabilitation.

She has been practising at both hospitals since she founded the practice and has since appointed a team of dynamic occupational therapists, all with post graduate qualifications in hand therapy to join the team.

She plays an active part in student training and has presented lectures at undergraduate level at the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Pretoria.  She also lectures at the post graduate diploma in hand therapy at the University of Pretoria.

Jani Tromp

In 2007 Jani graduated from the University of Pretoria with a BOccTher degree. From there she commenced with my Community Service year at Job Shimankana Tabane (JST) Hospital in Rustenburg. During this time, she rotated in pediatrics, physical, neurological and psychiatric rehabilitation.

As the need for hand therapy increased, she initiated a hand therapy program, which entailed early intervention, working more intentionally with the orthopedic surgeons, and promoting regular follow-ups with patients.

In March 2011 she joined a private practice, where she focused on physical and neurological rehabilitation of patients in conjunction with hand therapy.

To further develop her skills, she completed my Hand Therapy diploma in 2011 at the University of Pretoria. For the next 5 years, she worked in private practice in Rustenburg, continually developing her hand therapy and rehabilitation skills.

At the end of December 2016, she relocated to Pretoria and started working at Mischke Occupational Therapists. In March 2017 she completed a course in Functional Capacity Evaluations and started working in the medico-legal field.

It is a privilege for her to be in a position to assist patients to return to functional tasks after injury and/or surgery and experience an improved quality of life.

Madelé Stroebel

Madelé graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2019.  She did her community service year at Tembisa public hospital.

In January 2020 she accepted a position at a private practice in Johannesburg and gained valuable experience in the field of neurological and upper limb rehabilitation.

Madelé has a welcoming and warm personality, she is also a skilled and motivated occupational therapist.  She has been a valuable addition to our team since September 2021.
